IADEP Scholars

Christan Chin

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
Bachelor of Science in Public Health Epidemiology
Class of 2025

Research interest: Public Health, Epidemiology, Intervention & Harm Reduction, with a focus on underserved and marginalized populations.

Born and raised in Carmel, Ind., my passion for science and public health was shaped by firsthand exposure to systemic differences in health outcomes and a desire to be part of the solution. I strive to explore the intersections of differences in health outcomes, harm reduction, and disease prevention, grounded in a belief that research should be both community-informed and action-oriented.

I applied to IADEP to deepen my research foundation, engage with mentors who challenge and inspire me, and grow within an academic community. Beginning this next chapter at IU and settling into Indianapolis has been both energizing and affirming. I’m eager to build lasting relationships, sharpen my expertise, and contribute to research that uplifts communities and drives structural change.

Jacob de Jésus Candelario

University of Puerto Rico in Ponce
Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences
Class of 2024

Research interest: Cell-signaling, brain tumorigenesis, tumor microenvironment and hypoxia effects, novel therapeutics and chemoresistance, preclinical modelling of treatment response.

I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where my interest in medical care and science was sparked by early memories of seeing loved ones and family members go through cancer. My interest was reinforced at the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce where I gained hands-on research experience and learned the potential of translational research.

My research experiences have taught me the importance of bridging research and clinical practice in changing lives. I’ve learned that beyond innovation, reaching those in need of care matters. Overall, I’ve been inspired by the human effort to improve human health. Science can save lives, but it also connects and strengthens them.

I want to pursue an MD/PhD to treat people, research cancer, and grant access to care to people with brain cancer and neurological conditions. As an IADEP scholar, I am excited to delve into and contribute to the field of brain cancer research to understand the cell signaling mechanisms that support tumor progression and identify vulnerabilities in these mechanisms to develop therapies.

Christine Ramiro

CUNY Hunter College
Master of Arts in Biotechnology
Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences
Class of 2023

Research interest: Noncoding RNA regulatory pathways, cancer therapeutics, women's health and cancer health disparities. Extensive imaging expertise in quantitative polar phase, differential interference contrast and fluorescence microscopy.

I was born in Manila, Philippines, and raised in New York City. My interest in cancer began in third grade when a close family member was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a difficult battle, she entered remission a few years later and is still with us today. This sparked a lifelong interest in breast cancer, therapeutics and the clinical applications of scientific discoveries. During a senior year AP Biology trip to Rockefeller University, I learned basic lab techniques and engaged in a presentation on breast cancer research and health outcomes in breast cancer, deepening my passion for research and health equity.

As an undergraduate, I specialized in bioinformatics and neurodegenerative disease research, but I wanted to gain more experience in wet lab and cancer research, leading me to apply to IADEP. As an IADEP fellow, I aim to strengthen my skills in molecular biology, transcriptomics, experimental design, and scientific communication. I aspire to pursue a doctorate in cancer biology and become faculty, advancing research in cancers predominantly affecting women, addressing health outcomes, and teaching the next generation of scientists. I am thrilled to continue on in this program and cannot wait to collaborate with my peers and lab mates, expand my network, elevate my professional skills and advance knowledge in cancer biology.

Previous Students

Anaiya Crowner

Clark Atlanta University
Bachelor of science in biology
Class of 2023

Research interest & expertise: Dermatology, tumor microenvironment and metastasis and/or tumor immunology and immunotherapy, HPV transcription and replication.

I am from Indianapolis, home of the racing capital of the world! My interest in biomedical research and care stems from my passion for science and people. It may sound cliché, but I have always been intrigued by learning about the different types of diseases and how to treat them. I've had several family members who have been negatively affected by medical issues, from cancer to unknown illnesses. Furthering my research makes me feel like I am contributing to medicine for those people in my life. Memorable learning experiences that I've had thus far have included an amazing lab environment over the past few summers. I am lucky to say that there was not a day that I wasn't learning something in the lab, and I was excited to be present and expand my knowledge. I have worked in Dr. Elliot Androphy's lab over the course of two years and was able to understand, cultivate, and present my HPV research at a symposium. I have not had many opportunities to present to many people, so being able to share my research was a milestone for me. I am really excited to network and learn new techniques in the lab during my two-year experience in IADEP. After this program, I hope to pursue a medical degree specializing in dermatology and one day have my own practice to help minorities in low-income communities and create my own skincare line.
