Future Deaf Scientist Program

Future Deaf Scientist Program

The Future Deaf Scientist Program offers a clinical shadowing internship experience to local area high school students who are deaf or hearing impaired. Over four weeks in the summer, interns from the Indiana School for the Deaf shadow alongside accomplished cancer center clinicians, get hands-on pathology lab experience, and learn real surgical techniques.

Didactic lessons in science and medicine are provided each day. Interns also participate in daily “fireside chats” where they discuss breaking barriers in science over video call with deaf physicians and interns participating at other sites across the country. At the end of the program, the interns present what they’ve learned to their family, friends, peers, and instructors as part of a closing reception ceremony.

Interns receive a $1,500 stipend and one meal daily. The Future Deaf Scientist Program supports up to five interns each summer. Application is limited to students of Indiana School for the Deaf only.
